Castello is the main of the four historic districts of the city of Cagliari. It stands in a prominent position, on a limestone hill, about one hundred meters above sea level. Popularly the neighborhood is indicated without the article. The Castle currently hosts important institutions, such as the Prefecture and the council chamber of the metropolitan city of Cagliari in the rooms of the Royal Palace, located in Piazza Palazzo. The neighborhood offers numerous reasons for a visit, in fact there are numerous historical and artistic testimonies found there.
The best-known monuments, those that constitute an almost obligatory stop for anyone visiting the city, are certainly and rightly the cathedral, the Pisan towers and the bastion of Saint Remy.
However, perhaps the most evocative places in Castello are found by walking along the narrow streets, the stairways, the small squares that open up, like terraces, onto beautiful panoramas and looking out into the dark entrance halls of the buildings, once sumptuous noble residences and today often decadent and in need of restorations, visiting the other churches which, unlike the Cathedral, are not even noticeable from the outside, but house interesting works of art inside.
The parish of the Castle is dedicated to Santa Maria and co-titled to Santa Cecilia and has its headquarters in the cathedral church, the main church of the archdiocese of Cagliari, also in Piazza Palazzo.
The University of Cagliari also has its main headquarters in Castello, in the eighteenth-century building that houses the Rector's offices.
